Street Art in the Mission district of San Francisco
For my final project, I was lucky enough to continue my street art series in a location I have been wanting to shoot in since I got my camera, San Francisco. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19 concerns, the University of Colorado Boulder was forced to shut down in-person class sessions to promote as much social distancing as possible. I traveled home to the San Francisco, Bay Area to be with my family until the CDC says it is safe other wise to continue “normal” societal operations again. But this gave me the wonderful opportunity to travel into the city of San Francisco, specifically the Mission District, and take all kinds of photos of street art that the Mission District has to offer. The Mission District is located in east-central San Francisco and originally known as “The Mission Lands”, referring to the lands that belong to the sixth Alta California mission, Mission San Francisco de Asis. This mission is actually San Francisco’s oldest standing building and can be found in the northwest area of the district. During the early 1970’s and late 1960’s, many Latino artistic and cultural institutions were founded in the Mission District. A large number of Latino activists and artists in the neighborhood came together to create community based artists organizations that represented the Latino cultural traditions and aesthetic. Thanks to these community based artists, the Mission offers countless amounts of rich and vibrant street art that range from murals to paintings and especially graffiti, which can be found around every corner and down every alley throughout the neighborhood. Although the Mission has a lot to offer as far as street art, authentic Latino cuisine, and nice weather; it is primarily home to low-income working-class people. My hopes for this project are to have people from other parts of the world see the beautiful street art that the Mission District has to offer and inspire them to travel to the Mission to appreciate it in person and support the hard working community that is the Mission District of San Francisco.
Street Art in Five Points, Denver
For my midterm assignment I decided to do a continuation of my evidence assignment and take digital photographs of street art, but this time, rather than staying in Boulder, I went to the city of Denver, Colorado and specifically in an area known as Five Points. It is a vibrant multicultural area with cool dining and nightlife. When I went there for the first time to take photos I did not realize the area would be a neighborhood with so many different cultures and how unfortunate it is that it was clearly a neighborhood lacking basic public sanitary cleanliness. There was a lot of trash in the streets, everywhere. So, as I was taking pictures I had hope that maybe someone will see my pictures and realize how incredible some of the artist are in the area and they could be seeking out and get “discovered” if you will to become professional artists and give back to the community. It’s crazy how everywhere you go, in all the little corners and dark places we don’t really seem to notice, there is beautiful piece of art just waiting to be seen and appreciated. I have a lot of respect for street art because someone took the time and effort to go out and make a beautiful piece of art for everyone to enjoy, it’s such a simple way to enjoy art and the creativity in our world. In post editing I mainly utilized the contrast, exposure, saturation, sharpness, and shadow/highlight edit tool to make the colors brighter and give the pictures more depth. I had a lot of fun shooting pictures for this project and it inspired me to expand my creativity, some art doesn’t flow with a specific pattern or story and I like that it draws the eye and allows the observer to interpret it in many different ways. I hope I can do something like this in San Francisco because I feel it is already such an artistic place, I could find some really interesting and extravagant pieces in such a large city.
